Open Question: what options do i have if a friend has my belongings?

i was living up in south dakota when i was kicked out of my dads house due to a disagreement. well i ended up having to have a friend come pick me up from the house and i put a laundry basket full of clothes in the back of her car. well she told me it was alright if i left them in the back of her car until i found a place to stay, and two days later i ended up having to move down to kansas. she was the one who took me, and we reimbursed her for gas money and other expenses- however she had taken my clothes out of her car and put them in her room where she was staying and she couldnt get in to get the clothes that day but told me i would get them back. well its been well over a month, and i will be going back to south dakota next week but whenever i try to get ahold of her to get my clothes back theres no answer. what action can i take to get my stuff back? my mom currently has a lawyer and i was wondering if a letter from her could possibly influence things?...
